The price of the average broadband Internet connection around the world has been reduced by more than half in the last two years, according to research conducted by the International Telecommunications Union. This, however, doesn’t necessarily represent affordability as even at half the price, the service is still far beyond the pockets of average citizens living in developing countries. The annual study compares and measures fixed telephone, mobile cellular and fixed broadband internet services affordability as a percentage of Gross National Income (GNI) per capita in 165 economies around the world....

This just in: Reports from bloggers and Egyptian twitterati have confirmed that the Internet has been restored in Egypt by the country’s major Internet Service Providers ISPs. The decision has yet to be clarified as whether it is a single sided decision from the major telecom operators in the country or if the government has finally caved in to global pressure to restore the service to its citizens. One thing is for sure, which is the Egyptian people have single handedly overturned a ridiculously oppressive governmental decision, and are now connected directly once more to the outside world....

Among the 12 Asian countries in Akamai’s report on the ‘State of the Internet’, India is the only one that suffered a fall in Internet speed. While most countries have been experiencing a rise in average Internet speed due to new technologies, India suffered a 9.1 percent decline in average Internet connection speed in 2010, bringing it down to 0.8mbps. It is quite a known fact that India has one of the lowest Internet penetration levels worldwide with35% of Internet connectionshaving a speed of 256 kbps or less.
