It may not be the first time a twitter user has been arrested for their tweets, butNasser Abulis the first Kuwaiti citizen to face this charge. The irony in his arrest is that his criticism was not of the Kuwaiti government itself, but rather for criticizing the Bahraini and Saudi governments, particularly in relation to their treatment of the Shi’ite minority, of which he is one. His arrest is just one more trend in the clearly iron clad links between the GCC governments....

Tweeting in Kuwait is becoming quite the hazard. We reported earlier that Nasser Abul wasarrestedfor criticizing the Bahraini and Saudi Arabian royal families. Abul is now joined by yet another Kuwaiti citizen, both of whom will be put on trial. Lawrence al-Rashidi was also recently arrested, but for comments made about Kuwait’s own ruling family. According toReuters, both men are to be detained for the next two weeks, until their hearings are scheduled, on charges of harming the Gulf state’s interests and defaming the Kuwaiti emir....

We reported in early June onNasser Abul’s arrestby Kuwaiti authorities for tweets in which he criticized the Bahraini and Saudi royal families. Following several postponed trials, Abul was sentenced to three months in prison for insulting the the Sunni sect, but was acquitted of charges relating to the royal families.Global Voicesreports that he was released immediately as he had already served the prison sentence. During his trial, Abul’s lawyer claimed that the Twitter account had been hacked, and that someone else had posted the tweets....
