On Friday,news brokeof a number of warning letters sent to application developers for iPhone and iPad applications, warning them that by using Apple’s in-app payment mechanism, they were violating a patent issued to “inventions” firm Lodsys. The patent in question was filed in December 2003 as part of series of continuations on earlier patent applications dating back to 1992. The patent is credited to Dan Abelow, who sold his extensive portfolio of patents to holding firm Lodsys in 2004....
In a series of blog posts on its site, patent holding firm Lodsys reveals that it has gone ahead and sued developers forinfringingon its patents,reportsMacRumors. This is in spite of Applecoming to the developer’s defenselast week in a response letter to Lodsys. In its response, Apple told Lodsys that all developers had a license to use the technologies described in Lodsys’ patents because Apple themselves had the license. Lodsyssaysthat it has gone ahead and sued anyway because it feels that it has to in order to ‘preserve its legal options’....

Just days after BSkyB announced itsacquisitionof public Wi-Fi network The Cloud, the broadcaster has announced it will be giving 350,000 City workers free access to its internet service for 15 minutes every day. Pocket-lint reportsthe scheme will commence on February 1, mirroring a scheme that The Cloud currently has running in Glasgow. It is not known whether the announcement was planned before the BSkyB buyout or was rushed through after it wasannouncedthat Telefonica-owned mobile operator o2 was to open access to the around 450 public hotspots in a number of restaurants, shops and sports stadiums in the UK....
