Samsungannounced on Wednesdaythat it has filed a request with European Union agency Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) to void the design rights associated with Apple’s iPad tablet, as the Korean electronics giant seeks to gain the upper hand in its legal battle with the Cupertino-based iDevice maker. The application was submitted to the Spain-based agency on August 9, confirming Korean media reports, and is thought to be one of the methods Samsung will use to try and lift sales restrictions on its Galaxy Tab 10....

Samsung Electronics has now sued Apple in the US, widening it’s patent dispute out fromprevious claimsin Asia and Europe. According toBloomberg, Samsung claims that Apple is infringing on 10 of it’s patents related to mobile phones, the same ones that it claims in the previous suits. Apparently the technology includes “ways that a phone allows calls and Internet surfing at the same time; improvements in how text messages and attachments are sent; reductions in interference among mobile devices; and increases in the capacity of mobile networks....

Samsung has rubbished reports that it will enter negotiations with HP to buy its stricken mobile operating system webOS, after the company’s CEO Choi Gee Sung told reporters in Berlin that the company would “never” pursue a deal,reports Bloomberg. The Samsung chief said that “acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion”, reiterating the company’s commitment to its own mobile operating system Bada – with Samsung recently releasing three new Bada 2....

This is a bit of a bizarre twist in the ongoing legal case between Samsung and Apple in the United States. Samsung has filed its opposition brief to Apple’s motion for a preliminary injunction against Samsung devices. In it, Samsung claims that Apple wasn’t the first one to have the idea for a tablet with a large flat screen, pointing to the appearance of such a device in Stanley Kubrick’s seminal science fiction work ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’....
