With rumours circulating that Korean electronics giant Samsung was looking to purchase a mobile operating system following Google’s announcement it hadacquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, it seems the company definitely has the intention of pushing ahead with its own mobile platform after it emerged it may open-source Bada within the next year. The WSJ reportsthat the company has no plans to buy a software company, instead Samsung will reduce its reliance on the Android operating system and move into turning its Bada platform into a software suite capable of being used in smartphones and smart TVs – much like Google does currently with its smartphone, tablet and TV set-top box services....

Samsung appears to have been the subject of some undeserving press over the last couple of days, thanks largely to an article from theWall Street Journalwhich quoted Samsung executive Lee Young-hee as saying Galaxy Tab sales were “quite small” when in fact Mr Lee had said they were “quite smooth”. Numerous outlets picked up the story, reporting that the 2 million sales of the Galaxy Tab were being confused with shipments and that actual sales were substantially lower than first thought....

If you take a look at the specs of the just announced Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 3.6 and think to yourself that it sounds like an iPod touch, then you’d be right. Just like the iPod touch, this device has no SIM card, relying on WiFi communication only. But Samsung seems intent on encouraging people to use it as a phone, not just an entertainment device. Samsung makes specific mention of the fact that the Galaxy S WiFi can be used to make phone calls and comes with VoIP apps like Google Talk pre-installed so that users will have options for making calls anywhere that there is a WiFi connection....

As part of its legal battle with smartphone and tablet rival Apple, Samsung reiterated its desire to seek a global sales ban on the upcoming iPhone 5, also admitting that it did not pursue patent licensing fees from the Cupertino-based company because of its huge investment in Samsung components, it was revealed on Wednesday. Yonhap News reportsthat Samsung could “throw down the gauntlet” over Apple’s new iPhone, which is expected to be unveiled on October 4, according to a senior vice president who wished to remain anonymous, adding “it is true that Apple was free-riding on our mobile technologies....

Samsung has unveiled a new way of combatting TV theft: a system that can remotely brick the company’s televisions. The firm says the techwas activated on TVs that were looted from a warehouse in South Africa amidthe worst unrest in the country since apartheid. The South Korean tech giant added that the system is “already preloaded on all Samsung TV products.” It does, however, only work once the device is online....
