Android reportedly now the world’s top smartphone OS

A little over two years after it launched, Google’s Android operating system has overtaken Symbian as the world’s dominant smartphone operating system by volume of sales. That’s according to analyst firmCanalys, at least. As reported byReuters today, the company says that in the last quarter of 2010, 32.9 million Android phones were sold in the last quarter, compared to 31 million Symbian handsets. Last summer, Symbian was still a healthy wayaheadof its little green robot rival, although a report from Chinese trade publication DigitimespredictedAndroid’s rise to the top back in November, the same month that Google’s OSsurpassedSymbian in Asia....

Android: 550,000 phones activated a day, 130M devices, 6B downloads

Today, duringGoogle’s Q2 Earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page talked about the various successes of its products. One of the most interesting of these that he shared was the fact that there are now 550,000 Android phones being activated every day. If these numbers stay constant throughout the rest of the year, Google stands to add 99 million Android users to its stable. There’s a good chance that these numbers won’t stay constant however, as Google just announced 400,000 activations per day at Google I/O in May....
