Garage48, an Estonian 48 hour hackathon aimed at turning ideas into working prototypes or services within one weekend, recently came to Kampala, Uganda. TheUgandan hackathonis the organization’s first in East Africa after its previous event earlier this year in West Africa. The event was supported by Nokia, Google and MTN Uganda. At the event, 11 interesting startups were formed. One of the more interesting ones wasSomesha, a crowd funding platform that helps raise money to help put disadvantaged children in schools....

Gartner: Android and iOS powered 62% of smartphones sold in Q2

The mobile market continued to grow in the second quarter of 2011 as worldwide mobile device sales rose 16.5% on year to total 428.7 million units, as smartphones accounted for a quarter of overall sales, a new report by technology research specialists Gartner suggests. Smartphone sales grew 74% in the second quarter as consumers looked to entry-level and midrange Android handsets over feature phones, although sales actually declined quarter-on-quarter in Western Europe as the market showed “signs of fatigue”....

Gartner: Android tablets to hold 39% market share by 2015

Following itsrecent reporton the smartphone market, research firm Gartnerhas releasedits analysis on the current state of the tablet market, predicting that over the next four years Android tablets will begin to penetrate the market, holding 39% of tablet sales by 2015. Apple’s iOS is expected to remain the most popular tablet computing platform in the short-term, accounting for 69% of tablet sales in 2011 but falling to 47% by 2015....

Gartner: Android To Power 49% Of Smartphones By 2012

Market research firm Gartnerforecaststhat the Android operating system will power 49% of the world’s smartphones in 2012 as devices using Google’s open-source platform continue to lower in price, making it more appealing to emerging markets as a replacement to Nokia’s Symbian platform. Gartner’s new report suggests smartphones sales will near 500 million units in 2011, a 57.7% increase from 2010, with sales of open OS devices accounting for a quarter of all mobile handset sales during that period....
