The news that Apple’s Senior Product Manager of iCloud, John Herbold, has left the company was reported today by9to5Mac. This is just the latest in a series of departures of top Apple executives that includes Bertrand Serlet and Ron Johnson.
The departure was discovered on Herbold’s updatedLinkedInprofile that now lists him as the VP of Product atHealthTeacher. A quote on the profile alludes to his history with Apple.
I’ve been fortunate enough to define, ship and market a variety of products for one of the world’s most admired product companies. That opportunity was a great privilege.
Now I get to take that experience and apply it to the enormous challenge of materially improving youth health.
HealthTeacher has posted anannouncementon its site about Herbold joining the company. In the announcement they reveal that Herbold ‘led the development and marketing of Photo Stream’ as well as launching iCloud and contributing iPad and iPhone apps to Apple’s stable.
Herbold also makes a statement in the announcement, revealing a bit about his new role.

“To dramatically bend the curve on youth health, we must create engaging and innovative experiences that make good health cool and aspirational” said Herbold, “I look forward to leading the effort to enhance digital engagement that will equipour youth for a more successful future.”
Interestingly, Herbold’s LinkedIn profile lists his position previous to iCloud Product Manager as ‘Product Marketing Intern’. This supports the apocryphal ‘everyone starts as an intern’ policy that many ex-Apple employees and journalists havealludedto over the years.
The departure of Serlet, Apple’s SVP of Mac Software and a longtime confidant of CEO Steve Jobs, back in March, left an opening for Craig Federighi to assume his duties. We saw Federighi demonstrating Mac OS X Lion features at WWDC a couple of weeks ago.
Just last week, Ron Johnson, Apple’s head of Retail Stores, left to head up mid-level retailer J.C. Penny.
