Did you know that there is aSystem Administrator Appreciation Day? Turns out that it’s on the last Friday of every July, which makes it today.
At a time when viruses, hackers, script kiddies and other threats seem to be in the headlines more than ever, the people working behind the scenes to make everything work smoothly on the computer networks we use require a bit of appreciation.
As the day’s website notes:
Let’s face it, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It’s the least you could do.
The website even offersgift suggestions, from snacks to gift certificates, to (if you’re feeling particularly generous) a PlayStation 3 or iPhone 4.
Initiated in 2000, this annual event is design to draw attention to the work that those unassuming people in the server room do – from laying network cable, to software upgrades, to security patches, to… well, even tech support. Happy SysAdmin Day!
