Nokia has been named in a patent lawsuit after Helferich Patent Licensing sued the Finnish mobile giant in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois for infringing seven mobile patents.
The complaint focuses on push messaging and user interface patents, accusing Nokia’s devices including the Nokia N8, X6, E72, E73, 2329, 5800, 6350 of infringing technologies assigned to Helferich Patent Licensing.
The seven patents include:
US6087956: Paging transceivers and methods for selectively erasing information, US7003304: Paging transceivers and methods for selectively retrieving messages, US6983138: User interface for message access, US6097941: User interface for voice message access, US7280838: Paging transceivers and methods for selectively retrieving messages, US7376432: Paging transceivers and methods for selectively retrieving messages and US7499716: System and method for delivering information to a transmitting and receiving device.
According toAll About Patents, Helferich Patent Licensing started sending written notices to Nokia in May 2008 . However, Nokia did not respond to the letters and refused to license the patent from the company, even though 27 other mobile manufacturers are licensing technologies from Helferich Patent Licensing.
Other licensees include: Acer, Amazon, Apple, Asustek, Casio, Hitachi, Dell, HP, Palm, Microsoft, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and HTC.

It is believed the lawsuit will force Nokia to license the patents, with the company likely to settle out of court instead of pursing a costly legal battle.
