Social news discovery apps have found a natural home on the iPad, but they’re slowly expanding onto other platforms. Swiss startupSobeeshas been steadily building out its app Newsmix to become a cross-platform experience for some time, withiPad and Webversions already available. Today it’s launchingon Facebook.
Rather than simply port the exisiting app , with presents news stories from your Twitter, Facebook and RSS subscriptions in a ‘magazine’ format, today’s launch takes a specifically Facebook-focused approach.
The new Facebook app offers a way to “make sense” of content from Pages that you’ve marked as ‘Liked’. It displays news, photos and videos from the Pages you subscribe to in an easy-to-read format and additionally lets you browse the same types of content from the Pages subscribed to by your friends. The interface, with a row of friends’ faces across the top, recalls high profile, but unrelated, iPad social news appNews.me.
Sobees’ intention is to ignore the ‘Flipboard rival’ label by turning Newsmix into something that you can access on any platform. While the Facebook app only provides you with news linked to from Facebook pages, meaning that it’s not quite a duplication of the functionality of the iPad and Web apps, it’s another step towards the startup’s ultimate goal.
