Women’s soccer/football sealed a brand new tweets per second record today during the Women’s soccer world cup final.
In fact, as you’ll see fromTwitter’s own tweetbelow, the top two most tweeted records now belong towomen’ssoccer.
The women’s world cup final saw an incredible 7196 tweets per second, while the men’s Copa America Quarter Finals between Paraguay and Brazil came agonisingly close with 7166 tweets/second to seal second place in Twitter’s records.
Theprevious recordfor the number of tweets per second is 6,939, set at 4 seconds after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day.
While it might be nice to think this is due to a sudden surge in women’s soccer’s popularity, the fact of the matter is that the women’s final included two of Twitter’smost popular countriesbattling it out – Japan and USA. With that in mind, this seems a little less surprising. Had this been a final between Poland and USA, I doubt we’d be seeing a new record set.
